Owls visit the Victorian School Room

Today we went back in time to experience life in a Victorian School.
As we walked towards the school, Miss North, head mistress, rang the bell to let us know that lessons were about to begin.
Boys had to line up in height order and doffed their caps to Miss North.  The girls followed and had to curtesy as they entered the building.

The school room

The morning began with a prayer and the register.
Lessons included writing on slate, chanting tables, reciting, singing and a nature lesson about swallows.

Monitors had to hand things out.

Miss North had lots of Victorian sayings.

"Time is the enemy
It waits for no man, woman or child".

Break time
Boys played separately to girls.

Girls skipped, played with the spinning tops and threw quoits.

Lining up at the lavatories!

"Cleanliness is next to Godliness"
  Logan washes with carbolic soap!

Lunchtime

Everyone ate a typical Victorian lunch.  no crisps in sight!

In the afternoon the girls had a sewing lesson, whilst the boys looked at animal skulls and drew sketches.
The final lesson was pen and ink handwriting. Although there were lots of inky fingers at the end!

Everyone learnt a lot from their Victorian experience and enjoyed the day.
